For my groups location recce it was extremely easy to find exactly where we would shoot our film, this is because each setting that was used is accessible for my group because it is at the school we attend therefore we didn't need to hire lout any locations or make various trips to different places.

This our final pieces from our Target Audience research. Above there is the video that we created where we interviewed 3 people and asked them questions about 2 films that we done research on and got their opinion on each of the films. Also i have added in the survey that my group created and each of the results that we got from the 10 people that answered them.
First of all throughout the video it gave us the information about three films, Step Brothers, Ted 2 and Napoleon Dynamite. Overall i believe that the feedback was positive especially for napoleon Dynamite which is our groups inspiration for our opening sequence. This will help us when filming the opening sequence. The questionnaire was also helpful because everyone that answered liked the genre of comedy and there were even a few who picked Napoleon Dynamite over the other two films. However the majority of the people who answered our survey were male and it would've been better if there was a larger range of females that would answer the survey. Q1- We asked this question because we wanted to find out what our target audience would be for example if they are male, what comedy films do they like and the same for the female target audience. the majority of the people who took our survey were male Q2- We asked for the age of the people taking our survey because this will also help with finding our target audience. However, we would've hoped to have a range of ages within the results but the results showed only 16-25 year olds so we didn't have a variety of ages answering this survey Q3- For this question we wanted to find out if people like the genre that we are going for with our opening sequence, from the results we gained a positive vibe about the comedy genre which was very useful to us. Q4- This question was used because when we was researching about comedy films we found these 3 films and our inspiration was from Napoleon Dynamite and we wanted to see if people would enjoy that film. Overall, the results were spread out evenly for each films. Q5- We asked this question because we wanted to see if there was anything in particular that we could use in our own film. the majority said an upbeat and cheery theme. Q6- We asked this question because we wanted to find out if the people answering preferred our inspirational film ever others. the results lent more towards Step Brothers. Q7- we asked this question because we wanted to know if there were any aspects that we would need to include that we didn't think was needed but the majority of the people said that they would expect it to be funny. Q8- We wanted to know whether or not we needed to put a lot of focus on the narrative or whether it wasn't important but the result showed that it was very important. Q9- We used this question because we wanted to know if it would be best to use bright and cheerful colours or dark. Overall, the results showed that bright colours are the best for our type of film. Q10- We asked this question because we wanted to ensure that our close up style opening sequence would suit our target audience. Overall people answered with close ups, establishing shots and wide angle shots. For our Target Audience research, my group went onto a website called YouGov which gives vague information about the types of people that watch particular films. For example, their age, gender and even tells you what they would like to get up to and a daily basis. YouGov is an extremely helpful website and is effective when you want too find out the specific characteristics of the people that view certain films.
My group have chosen Comedy as our genre for our opening sequence and YouGov has given us information that we will therefore as people about to see if they agree and if they are interested in the films of our chosen genre. We will interview a certain amount of people who feel comfortable when they are sitting in front of a camera and then we will ask them for their opinion on each of the films that we have searched up and this will help us when we are identifying our target audience and give us a better understanding of this. When we have interviewed all of the people for the video we will edit the video so that we have a final copy of the video and can identify what we will need to do in our opening sequence. My group will also carry out a survey on SurveyMonkey which will have questions which ask about our specific genre of comedy and whether or not it is a good idea to use and if the audience that answer our survey will have an interest in the films that we will be looking at on YouGov. This survey will help us even more as well as the information gathered from YouGov and the information that we find out from both will help us decide the final decisions that we need to know about our audience before we start filming our opening sequence. The Hangover
This is he opening sequence to the Hangover. This film is about 4 best friends who go out on a stag do for Doug's wedding. This all goes completely wrong when Alan, Phil and Stu wake up in the morning in their penthouse and Doug is no where to be seen. The three friends go on a search for Doug too try and find him in time for his wedding but there are many stoppages throughout the film which nearly causes them too give up. This opening sequence starts off with Phil on the phone to Tracey, Doug's fiancé and the camera cuts from each person on the phone. There is a big difference interns of the situation that both the characters are in. For example, Tracey is getting ready for her wedding but is getting worried about where doug and his friends are whereas, Phil is standing on what looks like a desert and he looks extremely worn out as if he has been on an extreme adventure as he is very dirty and has a cut on his lip. Phil then starts too explain the situation that he is in and tells Tracey that they have lost Doug after his bachelor party, he then tells Tracey that the wedding won't go on and the opening credits begin. This is effective because this will draw the audience in as they want to know how the boys lost Doug and if they will be able to find him by the end of the film.
The first sense of comedy is that Phil, Stu and Alan are stranded on a desert with a random person and a car that looks beaten up, this shows the audience that the boys have clearly been through a lot to get to this point the question is just how did they. This is a typical convention of a comedy film because they seem lost and the fact that they have a wedding to get to would suggest that they really have messed up which in many comedy films there late elements of the main characters making mistakes and trying to fix them. The titles that are used in this opening sequence are written in sans serif font, which shows that this film is modern and it does show it's sense of youthfulness and childish behaviour that occurs during the film. This font is used in many comedic films as many of these films link with a use of youthfulness when there are mistakes or elements of schadenfreude used. Throughout the opening credits the camera focuses on many different buildings for example, a casino and these buildings would suggest to the audience that they will have a significance later on in the film and one of them being a casino will suggest that they may have done something wrong in there to lose Doug or it may suggest that this will pop up in the film, Doug may even end up being found in one of the buildings the audience will find out. Ted
This is the opening credits to the film Ted, this film is about the strong bond between a man and his teddy bear which comes to life from a very special wish that a young Johnny wished when he was young when he was given Ted as a Christmas present. Ted becomes an icon to the world but then people start to care less about him. However Ted has a special fan and is kidnapped, Jon and his girlfriend try and save Ted and the audience is left on a cliffhanger at the end when they feel that ted has died but he miraculously comes back to life.
Like both of the other films I have analysed, the titles in the credits are in sans serif font and this is just like the other films as Ted is a very childish and there are many different parts of the film that show this. In the opening credits the film producers have shown many pictures of Jon and Ted as if it's a montage showing many years going past showing that Ted has stuck with Jon throughout a lot of his life through many times. For example, there is a photo of Ted watching Jon pop one of his spots which would be seen as a bit funny to the audience as you would not expect a teddy bear to be there when you are popping your spots. This opening sequence is effective because it almost shows you the life that Jon has had whilst being with Ted instead of the film being about him growing from a child to an adult it gets straight to Jon being an adult and shows the friendship that they still have after the amount of years that they have been with each other and this makes it a better film as it won't be a boring film about Jon growing up with Ted. Captain America: Civil WarThe opening sequence to Captain America is very effective through its use of editing as it gives the audience an in sight of each of the characters who will star in the film without giving telling a whole lot about them. This is effective because this will draw the audience in straight away because they will want to find out more about the characters and see what role they have in the film. This is done by for example, when Iron Man appears through the floor you are able to see many different costumes which surround him which will give the audience a bit of a background story about him as they will portray if no one is familiar with him, that he has had something to do with the suits in the past or will be in this film. An effective part of this sequence is the use of introducing Spider-Man into the film and this is significant because most of the characters in the film are apart of the Avengers and this is suggesting that Spider-Man may be joining with them and this will be effective to the audience because he has large audience from his films. the way they use him in this sequence, he is shown to be on his own which suggests that he may be in conflict with the others or he could be joining forces the audience are not told what he will be doing in the film which makes this title sequence even more effective Mission Impossible: Rogue NationThis opening sequence starts off with Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) on a plane as he lets a parachute go off which takes him and a crate with him. This straight away has the audience on the edge of their seats as this creates that sense of action and then it cuts straight into a fuse wire being lit which also links to the genre of action. What the opening sequence does well is that there are a lot of fast cuts throughout of the credits which will also get the audience wanting to watch the film as it creates that mood for the film, the audience will fill that it will be action-packed throughout. The genre of action is hinted in the opening sequence throughout, for example linking back to the fuse wire, it continues to pop up the sequence and each time it is getting smaller which as an audience member you will feel intrigued and engaged to the film but at the same time will be wondering what exactly is going to happen when the spark reaches the end of the fuse wire and this is a very good way to start of a film so that the audience are drawn into the film. Another hint of the genre of action is the use of a gun, you see a character holding a gun and looking down the sight of her gun, which is telling the audience that there is going to be violence in this film which is what you would expect from an action movie. Step BrothersThis is the opening sequence from Step Brothers. This film is straight away hinting that is a comedy by the use of the quote, after it says "Actual quote from George W Bush". The film is trying to show the comedic element from the first few seconds of the film. After a few credits at the start of the film you are introduced to Brennan (Will Ferrell) and Dale (John C. Reilly). When you are introduced to Dale, you will see that he is picking up clothes from his dirty wash basket and smelling them to see if they are able to wear. This will be seen as funny to some audience members because he is being shown to be dirty and acting like a child as this is a childlike thing to do.
Next in the scene, Brennan is sitting down whilst eating nachos and cereal and then his mother walks into the room, this shows that he is a grown man still living with his mother and this will tell a bit about his character and the fact that he clearly doesn't have a job and doesn't care about what he does. Later on in the sequence Dale is shown to be playing a game called Guitar Hero, this is a comedic element because you are not likely to se an adult at home playing a game during the day, you would expect them to be at work and this is effective because this tells a lot about both of the characters and how they come across in the film. For our preliminary task we had the task to create a short sequence in small groups whilst considering the use of the following techniques, a Match on Action, Continuity, the 180 Degree Rule, the Rule of Thirds, a Shot Reverse Shot and the 4 different Micro Aspects.
Match on Action A match on action is a simple technique where the camera which cut to a shot of the characters action in the scene. For example, if the character was to walk up to a door and open it, the camera would follow them to the door and then cut to their hand opening the door. The 180 Degree Rule The 180 degree rule is a cinematography guideline where the camera keeps a 180 degree angle when recording a scene, the guideline states that two characters in a scene should maintain the same right/left relationship, if the camera crosses the invisible axis then it is crossing the line and is therefore called a reverse angle. this may cause confusion for the audience if the camera is to cross the line because they will see a different type of scenery from what they have first seen. Rule of Thirds The rule of thirds is applied by aligning a subject with the guide lines and their intersection points, placing the horizon on the top or bottom line, or allowing linear features in the image to flow from section to section. in terms of a conversation. then one person is talking they would be on one side of the shot and there would be space on the other side to show the division of the two characters and this would happen on the other side for the other character Shot Reverse Shot A shot reverse shot is a technique where one character is shown looking at another chapter who is often off screen and then the character is then shown looking back at them. this technique is often used when a conversation is occurring in the scene. Continuity Continuity editing is the process of creating a smooth and seamless narrative experience for the audience. This is the predominant style of film editing which occurs during the post production stage of the film or video. I shot my video with Lily and Michael and we filmed on the 2nd of February and myself, Lewis and Michael were the actors in the sequence as we borrowed Lewis to add another character into the video whilst Lily was filming most of the footage. However, each of us had a go at filming one another so that we got used to using one of the cameras for when we would use one on our own in the future. I believe that the Mise en Scene that we used was good as it fit in to our comedic genre of the video and also the POV shot of when the exchange took place was carefully framed with no shaking of the camera. overall, I believe that when the camera was from my perspective could've been better as the camera was shaking and the shot didn't look good and I will need to consider this when filming in the future. |
